HHAeXchange welcomed Pennsylvania users for a day of learning and connection this September. Led by CEO Paul Joiner, the team has grown recently with the acquisitions of Cashè, Generations Homecare, and Sandata. Joiner opened the day by sharing the company promise to put customers first and build around their core values.  He also highlighted the company’s work on AI features that are coming soon.

Caregiving, the Movie

Caregiving is a documentary from Executive Producer Bradley Cooper that explores systemic issues in the US care system. Cooper cared for his dad when he had cancer and is still caring for his mom. The film follows both paid and unpaid caregivers, who share their personal stories, along with the history of caregiving. Caregiving is streaming on PBS.

HHAeXchange and Caregiving

How does a PBS documentary and 18 short films become the subject of a software user group meeting? I suspect that promoting the film using Bradley Cooper played a small role in its popularity and viewership. But, in this case, it was HHAeXchange President Stephen Vaccaro who initiated the event. Stephen watched the film and recognized its importance. He sent it to the executive team and a lot of people inside the company watched it. As they started planning the user group meeting CEO Paul Joiner suggested reaching out to the show’s producers.

Closing on a High Note

Two of the film’s principals, director Chris Durrance and caregiver Matt Cauli joined HHAeXchange CEO Paul Joiner to close out the day. The panel was extremely well-received and Matt Cauli has been hailed as a near-perfect spokesperson for caregiving (the film and the industry).

Comments from HHAeXchange and the customer summit describe the film as “instrumental in bringing caregiving into the national conversation, shining a light on the critical role caregivers play every day and they challenges they navigate.”

Meet EP Tom Chiodo

Joined by HHAeXchange President Stephen Vaccaro, one of the film’s Executive Producers sat down with The Rowan Report to discuss Caregiving and Wellbeings.org. Tom Chiodo is the executive producer of special projects, national productions at WETA the PBS station in D.C. Tom develops documentaries, orginal digital content, and engagement campaigns for more than 330 PBS stations. Wellbeings is a campaign from public media to address critical health needs in America. Wellbeing currently has 18 short films that include additional history and information on caregiving in the U.S. that didn’t fit inside the 2-hour time constraint of the documentary. The channel has 2 million subscribers.

Not Done Yet

Speaking with Tom, it was immediately clear the passion and devotion he has for the caregiving industry. 

“Caregiving is struggling. It’s not just family members, but caregiving as an industry. They don’t get paid enough, even though they’re dealing with quality of life. The job is physically and emotionally demanding, and mentally draining.”

According to Tom, the caregiver shortage pushed Medicaid to promote self-directed care as an alternative. Now, there are an estimated 53 – 105 million unpaid adult family caregivers in the U.S. with $600 billion in lost income annually. Shining a light on the changes that need to be made, Caregiving has been viewed thousands of times, but more work needs to be done. Tom is currently working on a film on defeating dementia and another with filmmaker Ken Burns on adult mental health.

Understanding for All Ages

An estimated 5.4 million children and adolescents provide direct care for a family member. Wellbeing partnered with Fred Rogers Productions for Many Ways to Show You Care, coming to Wellbeings and PBS Kids on November 7. The series shows kids and teens engaged in caregiving with siblings, parents, and grandparents who suffer from various disabilities.

Paul Joiner, CEO of HHAeXchange, sat down with The Rowan Report Editor Kristin Rowan to discuss the company’s new headquarters in Manhattan, the company culture he’s creating, his dedication to support those helping our most vulnerable populations.

In His Own Words

The Rowan Report: Paul, thank you for taking the time to talk to us. HHAeXchange is going through some significant growth recently. And now you’ve moved your headquarters from Long Island to Manhattan, correct? How did that decision come about?

Paul Joiner: HHAeXchange has been in Manhattan for a long time. Sandata, who we acquired earlier this year, was in Long Island. But, the move was planned with or without Sandata. We needed a nice sized space to convene people. We valued a large, multi-purpose meeting space over individual office space. It’s a space where the teams can meet when they come to town, where we can host clients, and larger company meetings.

RR: How does the new space support your team?

Paul: The majority of our team is remote. I don’t think remote work is healthy for everyone. It varies from person to person. It’s not a long-term healthy option. Returning back to the office 9-5 five days a week isn’t practical and not all that healthy either. We have created policies, a workspace, and a culture where people are invited to visit. Some come 2-3 days per week. Some only once a month. We maintain flexibility for our teams to work when and where they need to work. Being a single parent, for example, is really hard, so we stay flexible to support single parents to be where they need to be.

At the same time, we’ve seen the benefit of the connection and how much more healthy it is by physically coming together. For the younger workforce, they are enjoying getting together and coming into the office. We have to support our younger employees and their professional development. How do you professionally develop via Zoom or Teams? Physically coworking and promoting good and active environments compel people to come into the office. To build connections, you have to be together, not just on video.

RR: You have workers across the country, though. How does that work?

Paul: We have the main office here in Manhattan, a large and growing office in Minneapolis, and a smaller office in Miami. We try to keep people in areas that make it easy to meet. However, we do have some roles with certain criteria that allows for mostly remote work. Those teams come to one of the offices to meet when they can. We’ve hosted team meetings here and in Minneapolis recently.

RR: Has this new meeting space had an impact on the company culture?

Paul: Yeah, it has improved. We are having real, honest conversations about what needs to be improved. The team effort is the way we win and our teams understand that. We also understand that working hard doesn’t mean foregoing your life and the ability to recharge.

Work hard, be passionate, and motivate people with your mission and vision. The people we serve don’t have it easy, they are supporting the most vulnerable people.

RR: In a recent statement, you said that the new location will support collaboration and innovation. Do you have new features on the horizon? Are you investing in AI capabilities?

Paul: We have a lot in the works. We have a new mobile app in the beta phase that we’ll be rolling out that I’m really excited about. It’s actually an update, but it’s so massive that it’s basically new. We’re working on data analytics and data tracking for some of our largest clients.  We’ve consolidated some screens into one spot to streamline and make the user more efficient. A lot of what we’re working on is foundational. We’re focusing on supporting companies as they scale.

RR: Are you looking into AI, either within the HHAeXchange platform, or in a partner?

Paul: Yeah, of course. AI is the future and it’s everywhere. We are looking at ways to return time to users, make it easier to train users, and make things easier on caregivers. We will try to generate more buzz around AI, but not until there’s real, tangible value. AI definitely needs to be part of our strategy, but being smart where we apply it to truly get the value-add for our clients. It has to improve the quality of life for the user. Does it improve the ability of caregivers to care for people?

RR: Do you have any additional acquisition or growth plans for the second half of 2025?

Paul: There’s a lot going on in the marketplace right now. A lot of our clients are growing really well also. So, we’re sort of in a heads-down mode. There’s a handful of things we’re looking at. Right now, I’m really excited about being a bigger participant across the full continuum of care for our populations. There are some opportunities to innovate and evolve to support integrated care over the next few years. I’ll just leave it at that…for now.

Earlier this month, we announced that HHAeXchange acquired Sandata. This announcement came not long after the announcements that they had acquired Cashé and Generations. Last week, The Rowan Report sat down with Stephen Vaccaro, President of HHAeXchange to talk about this latest acquisition and what it means for HHAeXchange going forward.

Stephen, thank you for meeting with me today. I’m sure you are quite busy with this latest news. What can you tell us about the acquisition of Sandata?

Stephen Vaccaro:

We’re very excited about all of the changes we’ve made this year. We were excited about Cashé and Generations, and we’re excited about Sandata. Sandata is larger, in scale, than the other two. They operate at the state level, in managed care, and with providers.

RR: 

How will this acquisition impact what HHAeXchange is doing?

Stephen:

HHAeXchange recognized the need for more standardization in the industry. It’s been so fragmented for so long. We need better data and better insights to deliver better care. The combined footprint of HHAeXchange and Sandata puts us in the position to deliver on that.

What immediate changes should we expect to see?

Stephen:

Sandata as a brand will continue to exist, just under the HHAeXchange brand now. We have no plan to make any changes to the technology or the teams. We’ve spoken to the state and managed care clients and they are excited about this as well. They will continue working with the teams they know and the technology they know.

RR:

Do you anticipate more changes down the road?

Stephen:

Over the next six to twelve months, we will evaluate the technology to assess where it can be put to best use. We expect to see some thoughtful consolidations that are well thought out and communicated to all. We have no plan to get rid of Sandata or make anyone leave the platform. As we are consolidating these technologies, we’re taking the expertise of each of these great organizations into one integrated platform. We think what you’ll see is the new standard for homecare management, driving innovation and efficiency across the industry. This, in turn, helps deliver better care in the home.

RR:

I spoke with Paul Joiner, HHAeXchange CEO, after the acquisition of Cashé and Generations. At that time, he told me that those acquisitions were part of a larger strategy that comes with a bigger reveal. Now that the big reveal has happened, what can you tell us about the future of HHAeXchange?

Stephen:

We are focusing on operational efficiency so caregivers can focus on care and better outcomes. The message we want to share is that we are ensuring that there’s flexibility, inclusiveness, scalability within homecare management solutions to any stakeholder. We will never be the single solution for everyone, but we aim to be the best solution to adapt to regulatory changes and emerging trends and make sure that we’re building trust and confidence and demonstrate the commitment that we’re making to ensure best in class software. We believe the path we’re on is transformative for the industry.

RR: 

It sounds like there may be more announcements in the future. I’m excited to see what you do next. Thank you for talking with The Rowan Report.

HHAeXchange 2024 Homecare Survey: 91% of Caregivers View Patient Relationships as Critical to Job Satisfaction

New data shines a spotlight on the motivations of caregivers and their dedication to improving health and wellness for the thousands of members receiving care in the home

New York, August 7, 2024 – HHAeXchange, a leader in homecare management solutions for providers, managed care organizations (MCOs), and state Medicaid agencies, today announced the results of the HHAeXchange Homecare Insights Survey, which surveyed more than 3,900 caregivers across the company’s homecare agency clients. The survey was designed to understand the motivations of today’s caregivers and find ways to enhance caregiver satisfaction to ultimately improve health outcomes. 

The need for quality caregivers in the homecare industry continues to grow, as new data has found that many individuals are rejecting institutional care options due to a lack of quality care. Therefore, attracting and rewarding high-quality caregivers is crucial to meet today’s demand. 

Patient Observations

Correlated to this, 60% of the caregivers surveyed said making a positive impact on their patients’ health and well-being is the biggest motivator for their work. Additionally, 57% of caregivers reported that they would take extra time to record patient observations after each visit, motivated by the knowledge that it could improve their patients’ care.

In addition to understanding the importance of their role in improving patients’ quality of life, caregivers are attracted to, and choose to remain in, the homecare industry because of the relationships they form with patients. In a 17% increase from last year’s survey, ninety-one percent of caregivers surveyed revealed that the relationships they form with the patients they care for increase their job satisfaction.

“While the challenges and demands of being a caregiver still remain – low compensation, feelings of stress and exhaustion, and risk of catching infectious diseases – this survey shows that caregivers remain committed to their work to improve the lives of their patients,” said Stephen Vaccaro, President of HHAeXchange. “As more individuals seek homecare options, the homecare industry must continue to evolve to ensure caregivers are given the resources and recognition they need to remain motivated and focused on patient care.”

Another important finding from the survey was caregivers’ interest in receiving professional training as an additional resource to improve their career satisfaction and longevity. Specifically, the caregivers surveyed said they would be interested in receiving training related to reducing stress (24%), understanding how to treat patients with specific illnesses (18%), and how to use additional medical equipment (14%). 

“Training is a critical component of caregiving that improves caregiver job satisfaction, confidence, and improves care outcomes,” said Glen Persaud, Vice President at New York Health Care Inc. “Our agency offers training opportunities and ensures our caregivers receive the help and support they need to ensure we are providing the best care possible.”

HHAeXchange Acquires Generations Homecare System, Enhancing its Software Platform for Homecare Stakeholders

Through the acquisition, HHAeXchange will expand footprint into new states and gain talent with deep homecare technology experience

NEW YORK, July 8, 2024 – HHAeXchange, a leader in homecare management solutions for providers, managed care organizations (MCOs), state Medicaid agencies, and fiscal intermediaries, today announced its acquisition of Generations Homecare System. Generations provides an all-in-one homecare agency management software solution that gives providers the ability to connect care teams, simplify daily tasks, and maintain compliance. This acquisition brings together two companies sharing a common vision and values, aimed at driving innovation and excellence in homecare.

The homecare industry is poised for tremendous additional growth, with demand for personal care aides expected to rise by 43% between 2020 and 2035. Industry stakeholders need a software platform that can rapidly evolve to meet the requirements and growing needs of providers, caregivers, and payers – particularly when it comes to compliance and usability.

The care at home industry changes seemingly daily with new regulations, HH agencies opening and closing, more people qualifying for Medicare, technological advances like artificial intelligence, and the list goes on. Since 2008, HHAeXchange has been part of the change and growth of the industry. This week, The Rowan Report sat down with CEO Paul Joiner to discuss HHAeXchange’s recent changes, upcoming changes, and acquisitions. 

Cashé Software

On June 18, 2024, HHAeXchange announced the acquisition of Cashé Software, a Minnesota-based solution for homecare operations and billing. The merging of these two companies yields expanded ability to help homecare providers and billers with compliance, streamlined billing, and optimized workforce management.

Generations Homecare System

Just three weeks later, on July 8, 2024, HHAeXchange announced the acquisition of Generations Homecare System, an all-in-one homecare agency management software solution that connects care teams, simplifies daily tasks, and maintains compliance. This pairing aims to drive innovation and excellence in homecare.

Minnesota Office and Call Center

Ten days after the acquisition of Generations, HHAeXchange announced the opening of a new office and call center in Bloomington, MN. The office will offer localized, skilled agents to provide timely, efficient, and responsive customer support. This location will also be a home base for HHAeXchange employees who work remotely in the area and will provide job opportunities and growth in Bloomington.

Paul Joiner: On the Record

Paul Joiner became the CEO of HHAeXchange in March of 2023. Joiner came to HHAeXchange after serving as CEO in the substance abuse and mental health space. We sat down with Paul this week to talk about his position, the recent acquisitions, and future plans for HHAeXchange.

The Rowan Report:

HHAeXchange has gone through significant change and growth just in the last couple of months. Can you tell us about some of the plans you made for HHAeXchange?

Paul Joiner:

A lot of the growth was keyed up when I came on board. I just took it to the finish line. Implementing growth effectively required some changes. There is some pressure in this industry to evolve quickly.

RR:

What are some of the challenges you faced?

Joiner:

The current issues of recruiting, onboarding, retention, and training put a lot of pressure on technology solutions. And the pace of that change makes it harder for tech solutions to keep up.

Did that drive the strategy behind your recent acquisitions?

Joiner:

Looking at strategy in the context of current challenges: finding people who understand the space and finding knowledge applied in technology is not easy to find or to develop organically. Then we find businesses like Cashé where we like the people, their position, their geography, and they have pieces that will help us build toward our vision of being the leader in Medicaid homecare and driving value and efficiency.

RR:

What does acquiring Cashé do for HHAeXchange?

Joiner:

Well…I can’t tell you, because it’s part of a strategy that comes with a bigger reveal. But I can tell you that acquiring Cashé is part of our technology lift. They have built a new technology with modern architecture. We will use that as a starting point to provide an additional offering in the marketplace. Cashé enables us to build faster, and innovate faster. While we continue to invest in HHAeXchange, Cashé gives us a head start on modern tech that can be added to our current offerings, or sold as a stand-alone solution.

RR:

And what about Generations?

Joiner:

Generations is a great business that has put business logic and rules into their technology. They also have a geographical presence where HHAeXchange does not.

RR:

How did this rapid growth of two acquisitions and a new call center impact HHAeXchange?

Joiner:

Taking on this much change created the need for improved communication across three organizations. That communication helped us provide a better narrative for Cashé and Generations employees who may have been a little nervous about the change.

RR:

You must have some really great teams in those three organizations to navigate these changes.

Joiner:

We have a great team. There are a lot of people we’ve brought on board in the last two years as we continue to grow along with the incredible team of people who have been at HHAeXchange much longer. We’re comfortable dealing with scale, size, and complexity, so the changes didn’t overwhelm us.

RR:

What does future growth look like for HHAeXchange?

Joiner:

We will probably continue to acquire companies. Maybe not multiple companies in a matter of weeks, but we will continue when the opportunity arises. The spirit behind our strategy is to focus on what our customers need. We are in a position in the market to have a big responsibility to be good stewards, help our customers, caregivers, and agencies, and improve the quality of life for patients.

HHAeXchange is focused on getting the right technology into the hands of caregivers. We’ve already done EVV and point-of-care well. Can we make a difference now in how they are onboarded and scheduled? Can we make a difference in billing and how they’re getting paid? That requires acquisitions and investing organically.

RR:

Any final remarks on what the future holds for HHAeXchange?

Joiner:

Part of our vision board is building a community of caregivers through technology. The good agencies are trying to figure out how to think as much about the caregiver as they do for the people receiving care. Turnover and training is so hard, so we need to invest in our caregivers.

We also need to be a better supplier of data to arm agencies and health plans with the data they need so they can have useful discussion around the date and how they’re supporting caregivers. I’m sad sometimes because agencies don’t get enough financial support for their effort. The industry can be doing more for their caregivers.

We take our responsibility to do the right thing seriously. Because of this, we are investing in the space and we want more options so we can be better for the industry. Our intention is to make a difference.

The office and call center opening will strengthen HHAeXchange’s technical support and fuel job creation in Minnesota

NEW YORK, July 18, 2024 – HHAeXchange, a leader in homecare management solutions for providers, managed care organizations (MCOs), and state Medicaid agencies, today announced the opening of a new Minnesota office and call center for its Technical Customer Care team and local company employees. The strategically located call center in Bloomington, MN will offer localized, skilled agents to provide timely, efficient, and responsive customer support.

This investment is one of many designed to enhance HHAeXchange’s customer care capabilities, while also creating job opportunities and growth in the local area. Minnesota is ripe for technology expansion, particularly within the medical technology industry, accounting for 380,263 jobs in 2019 and ranking 13th highest in high-tech jobs among all states, making it a perfect fit for HHAeXchange’s new location. 

This announcement comes on the heels of HHAeXchange’s recent acquisition of Cashé Software, a leading Minnesota-based solution for homecare operations and billing. Integrating Cashé talent with deep domain and regional expertise will further support HHAeXchange in creating a leading homecare software platform and a strengthened presence in Minnesota.
